Meet Joan Goodspeed
Your Sewing Guide for Creative Makers
Joan Goodspeed is the creator and host of Break + Remake, a creative community dedicated to helping makers sew, upcycle, and rethink their relationship with fashion and the environment. With over 20 years of experience in costume design, textile crafts, and education, Joan brings a rare mix of professional expertise and playful curiosity to everything she teaches.
A graduate with an MFA in Costume Design, Joan has worked with some of the most prestigious companies in the performing arts, including Center Theatre Group, LA Opera, and Pageant of the Masters, as well as numerous independent costume houses across Los Angeles. Known for her fearless experimentation and ability to bring imagination to life, she’s created everything from wearable champagne bottles to showgirl hats made from restaurant salad bowls.
As an educator, Joan has taught sewing, tailoring, pattern making, draping, and experimental design at the college level and beyond. Her YouTube channel, Break + Remake, has inspired nearly 400,000 makers around the world to embrace sustainable creativity with confidence and joy. Through her teaching and community, Joan helps sewists of all sizes and skill levels create wardrobes—and lives—they truly love.
Sew in Community
Check Out SewCal Sewing Club
We are a group of garment sewists who enjoy working together, sharing knowledge and celebrating our makes. While we mostly focus on sewing clothes, there are quilters and bag makers in the group as well. Anyone is free to join, we meet once a month usually in Los Alamitos, CA at Sewing Lab. We also host events around LA like shopping trips and fabric swaps.
Please feel free to start a sewing club in your LA area, however we value diverse voices, protect the vulnerable, and cultivate a wide range of experiences and people. Please reach out to Joan to help get the party rolling!
